InterGedi’s participation in the International AELFE Conference 2025

Many of our team members, Dr Rosa Lorés, Dr Pilar Mur-Dueñas, Dr Isabel Corona, Dr Silvia Murillo-Ornat, Dr Daniel Pascual, Dr Vicky Gil, Luis Martínez-Kleiser, Ana E. Sancho-Ortiz, Lucía Lasheras-Bielsa and Alba Ansó-Millán, participated in the International AELFE Conference to wrap up this academic year 2024/2025.
This XXIII edition, entitled “Revisiting LSP in the multimodal literacy age”, was celebrated last week, from the 25th to the 27th of June 2025, and was hosted by Universitat Jaume I. The organising committee was led by Dr Noelia Ruiz-Madrid and Dr Miguel Ruiz-Garrido, members of GRAPE, the Group for Research on Academic and Professional English based in Castelló de la Plana (Valencian Community, Spain).
In the morning parallel sessions on Thursday 26th of June 2025, Lucía Lasheras-Bielsa presented preliminary findings from the research project on which she has recently embarked, with a paper entitled “Instagram as a multimodal platform for the recontextualization of English phraseology: Metadiscursive strategies in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)”. Afterwards, Luis Martínez-Kleiser delivered a presentation on “The role of explanatory strategies in the recontextualization of scientific knowledge for adolescent audiences in digital media”. Simultaneously, in another panel discussion, Dr Daniel Pascual presented results from his pragmatic analysis and proposal through a paper entitled “From pragmatic strategies to rhetorical patterns: How research groups manifest intention in their projects”. Later on, Dr Isabel Corona gave a speech which revolved around “Getting the (right) picture (right): The visual representation of mental health across media”. As to Dr Rosa Lorés and Dr Silvia Murillo-Ornat, they co-presented a paper in the afternoon session on the same day, Thursday 26th. Theirs was centred on the notion of polyphony, entitled “Polyphonic patterns in digital science recontextualization: The case of popularizations in online magazines”.
On Friday 27th of June 2025, Alba Ansó-Millán focused on “Exploring proximity-building strategies in digital dissemination practices with diverse audiences: The case of psychology-related podcast discourse”. In her paper, she reported on and compared the results from stance and engagement markers employed by the podcaster and by the experts. Next, Ana E. Sancho-Ortiz delivered a presentation that was aimed at “Leveraging Instagram affordances for science dissemination: A social semiotic multimodal approach to instruction on Instagram posts for physical therapy”. During the closing ceremony, the results of the 2025 edition of the AELFE Enrique Alcaraz Research Awards were announced and we got excellent news! Three of our InterGedi members were awarded across two established categories. Dr Daniel Pascual emerged as winner within the category of Unpublished Works, with his work entitled “Scientific dissemination and professional practices through digital media. The study of pragmatic strategies in the communication of international research projects”. In the category of Published Works, the winners were Dr Ramón Pló-Alastrué and Dr Isabel Corona, with their edited book Digital Scientific Communication, published by Palgrave Macmillan in December 2023. May we offer our deepest congratulations to the three of them on their admirable and professional job!
We would also like to extend our sincere congratulations to our international member Prof Jan Engberg, whose co-edited works on Perspectives on Knowledge Communication (2023), by J. Engberg, A. Fage-Butler and P. Kastberg, and The Digital (R)Evolution of Legal Discourse: New Genres, Media, and Linguistic Practices (2023), by P. Anesa and J. Engberg, ranked in second and third place in the category of Published Works.
Many thanks to the committee, who took exquisite care to organise this event, putting together wonderfully thought-out academic and social programmes. Their hard work helped turn this conference into a fruitful and enriching meeting point to foster collaborations and further research!
