OUR COLLABORATION IN THE “I, EXPERT” AUTUMN SCHOOL

Last week, the InterGedi team received fellow scholars from TU Chemnitz to host the “I, Expert” Autumn School, as part of our collaboration with the “I, Expert: Media competence for science through linguistics” led by Dr Marina Ivanova. After visiting Chemnitz for the “I, Expert” Conference last month, we were pleased to be able to finally meet again this time at the University of Zaragoza (read more about our collaboration here).

The main aim of the “I, Expert” Autumn School, which took place from the 19th to the 21st of November 2024, was to discuss examples of science dissemination across different genres, with the ultimate goal of compiling an annotated corpus of best practices in science communication. It was organised as a series of presentations and  hands-on workshops that lasted for three days. Bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students and researchers were welcome and had to send in their letters of motivation to participate.

On the first day, Tuesday 19th, Dr Marina Ivanova delivered an opening speech to introduce her project before moving on to deal with X posts/tweets for research and dissemination purposes. Dr Daniel Pascual, Dr Pilar Mur Dueñas and Dr Silvia Murillo unpacked their rhetorical structure and offered insights about aspects such as metadiscursive features and pragmatic functions of emoji language. In the afternoon, Dr Daniel Pascual guided the practical session where participants were grouped and had a chance to explore collaboratively the production side of X/Twitter. On Wednesday 20th, the discussion turned to press releases and we had the pleasure of listening to on-site and online talks by researchers like Dr Christina Sánchez-Stockhammer. During the workshop, Dr Marina Ivanova coordinated the production of press releases. On Thursday 21st, Dr Mamen Horno and Carmina Puyod, from the University of Zaragoza, were invited to discuss and share their experience and expertise in communicating science. To wrap up the workshops, Dr Marina Ivanova coordinated the annotation of the created texts.

Check out the project website to have a look at the compiled list of annotated tweets and press releases which will be published soon!

We’d like to finish by thanking the participants at the Autumn School and, particularly, Dr Marina Ivanova and her colleagues from TU Chemnitz. We are profoundly grateful for having been able to contribute to and learn from the “I, Expert” project. To future collaborations!
