InterGedi’s participation in the AMPRA-6 conference
Our team members Dr. Silvia Murillo, Dr. Rosa Lorés and Dr. Daniel Pascual have recently participated in the 6th International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association, which was celebrated online from the 27th to the 29th of September 2024.
The American Pragmatics Association (AMPRA) brings together academics and students from North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. It promotes collaboration and scholarly discussion on various aspects of pragmatics, including linguistic, cognitive, historical, social, intercultural, and interlanguage dimensions, through its biennial conferences, workshops, and colloquia. In this edition, the plenary speakers were Prof. Salvatore Attardo (Texas A&M University Commerce), Prof. Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich (University of North Carolina Charlotte) and Prof. Mandy Simons (Carnegie Mellon University).
On the first day of the conference, Dr. Silvia Murillo presented a paper titled “The use of emoji in Twitter/X for research dissemination purposes” as part of the “Social (digital media)” panel. In her paper, she examined the use of emojis in tweets from 10 different research website accounts in order to explore how they help to disseminate results and promote their research. On the last day, Dr. Rosa Lorés and Dr. Daniel Pascual presented their respective papers also as part of the “Social (digital media)” panel. Dr. Rosa Lorés’ paper was titled “Strategies for engaging the audience: A pragmatic exploration of the recontextualization of expert knowledge in digital discourse”. In it, she explored the pragmatic processes of recontextualization in thirty online feature articles, focusing on expert-oriented and audience-oriented strategies. You can read more about Rosa’s presentation here.
In Dr. Daniel Pascual’s paper, titled “Comparing pragmatic strategies in research groups’ digital practices: Project websites versus social media”, he presented the analysis results of different pragmatic strategies used in the websites and Twitter accounts of thirty Horizon2020 projects. Although in this year’s edition of the AMPRA conference it was not possible to meet in person, it still was a great opportunity to share our research and learn from other experts in the field. We are looking forward to the next one!
