InterGedi celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Ever since the United Nations‘s proclamation in 2015, on the 11th of February we internationally commemorate the key role of young girls and women in science, both at present and throughout history. Therefore, to pay tribute to this, our team members Alba Ansó-Millán, Ana E. Sancho-Ortiz and María Fanlo-Piniés, participated this week in the 11F initiative, going to schools to give visibility to what we do as linguist researchers in InterGedi.

The title of their talk was “Science and Dissemination: Discover them alongside women linguists”, was directed at groups of 4th-year students of Secondary Education and targeted various aims.

First of all, our InterGedi researchers encouraged students to think critically and to reflect on the motivation behind the need to celebrate this International Day. Secondly, they questioned traditional views of science, expanding its definition to encompass disciplines beyond STEM, to include fields that also draw on the scientific method, such as Linguistics. Last but not least, they made students become discourse analysts themselves! They had them look into an Instagram video post related to Physiotherapy and asked them to write down any strategies they could notice. It was a fantastic way to raise awareness of how expert-disseminators employ linguistic and multimodal strategies to ease understanding and appeal to diverse audiences of different ages and backgrounds!

Our group member María Fanlo-Piniés gave the talk twice at Colegio Santa Ana in Huesca, on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th, February 2026. As to Alba Ansó-Millán and Ana E. Sancho-Ortiz, they went to IES Miguel Servet, delivering the speech in Spanish, on Wednesday 11th, February 2026, and then in English, on Friday 13th, February 2026.

It was a delight to meet with such a positive reception from our young audiences! Looking forward to taking part in this initiative next year!
