Pilar Mur-Dueñas and Vicky Gil present ICLHE programme and connections with InterGedi project in several events
In the last couple of months, our colleagues Pilar Mur-Dueñas and Vicky Gil have participated in several academic events presenting the ICLHE programme at Universidad de Zaragoza. As members of the CLIC@unizar group, they have been discussing advantages of exploiting this programme for future teacher trainers and scholars, highlighting original theoretical and methodological approaches. In these fruitful events, they have come up with great ideas by networking with other research groups and putting forward upcoming challenges and opportunities that should be addressed for an effective training of ICLHE teachers.
By the way, CLIC@unizar organised the IV ICLHE Regional Group Symposium last year and we invite you to take a closer look and participate in future initiatives. You can check out the scope and the programme of the symposium here.
Pilar Mur-Dueñas was invited to deliver a talk at the Dissemination Day of the SHIFT project (Understanding the Internationalisation of Higher Education from the Student Perspective: A Longitudinal Examination of Disciplinary Literacies in English-medium education) at Universidad Complutense de Madrid on 20th and 21st May.
This Dissemination Day served as a final event for the SHIFT project, led by our colleague Emma Dafouz. Invited speakers included Magnus Gustafsson (Chalmers University of Technology), Ana Llinares (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and Julia Hüttner (University of Vienna), Enric Llurda (Universitat de Lleida), and Christiane Dalton-Puffer (University of Vienna), and SHIFT project members also presented their latest work and findings.
Pilar's talk was entitled "An ICLHE training itinerary: Nurturing teachers' awareness of academic and disciplinary literacies". She offered fresh perspectives on the need to raise awareness and effectively work on multiple, complementary literacies, for which she depicted a ground-breaking itinerary that displayed a step-by-step process that combines English-Medium Instruction (EMI), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) methodologies. The event was really insightful and helped create a more solid framework of researchers and scholars as well as trainers around the concerns of ICLHE.
Talking about the ICLHE Symposium, Pilar Mur-Dueñas and Vicky Gil participated in this years' edition, after organising last year's event. The V ICLHE Spain Research Group Symposium took place on 13th and 14th June at ETSEIB (Escola Tècnica Superior d'Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona) and was organised by colleagues of the consolidated group "Cercle de Lingüística Aplicada (CLA)" Marta Aguilar, Elisabet Arnó, Balbina Moncada and Clàudia Barahona. The theme of the event was "The role of ICLHE and the challenges of ESP: Equitable and sustainable internationalisation", and plenary speakers Julia Hüttner (University of Vienna) and Josep Maria Cots (Universitat de Lleida) gave an expert perspective of the paths ahead for ICLHE researchers.
Our colleagues presented a paper entitled "Training ICLHE lecturers: Main challenges to sustain a professional development programme", showing quantitative data about participants in the programme and some of the obstacles surmounted in the design and implementation of the CLIC@unizar programme.
Finally, Vicky Gil and Pilar Mur-Dueñas also presented a second paper looking into the opportunities for different agents: institutional stakeholders, content lecturers (see slide below), students and teacher trainers. Taking the example of content lecturers, they foreground the many advantages of getting specialised in innovative strategies and resources, disciplinary discourse, refletive teaching, ICT skills and tailored teaching methods.
The event was great to share the work done by the CLIC@unizar group, give it visibility and foster connections with other research fellows. The ICLHE programme at Universidad de Zaragoza is expanding and new directions have already been sketched for the upcoming academic year. Stay tuned for next year's events and see how InterGedi members contribute to enhancing teacher training!
