CIRES Research Seminar 2025

On Friday 30th of May 2025, alongside colleagues from the research group CIRES (Comunicación Internacional y Retos Sociales), the InterGedi team co-organised the research seminar entitled “Research methods for discourse studies”. Three scholars were invited, Dr Niall Curry, Dr Edgar Bernad-Mechó and Sasha Coelho, who shared their expertise with us through workshops on different research methods, during the morning and the afternoon sessions.

First, Dr Niall Curry, from Manchester Metropolitan University, delivered a talk on “Corpus approaches to investigating academic and public-oriented research communication”. He shedded light on some metadiscoursal trends in semi-academic communication practices such as TheConversation, highlighting some insights from a corpus-based study of English, Spanish and French texts. His workshop focused on exploring the affordances of Sketch Engine, a corpus manager and text analysis software.

Then, Sasha Coelho, from Technische Universität Chemnitz, gave a presentation entitled “Data Visualisation with R: An introduction to ggplot 2”. She started first by offering an overview of the programming language R to then run a hands-on session where we got to navigate RStudio IDE.

Next, in the afternoon session, the presentation of Dr Edgar Bernad-Mechó, from Universitat Jaume I (UJI), was entitled “GRAPE-MARS: Using video-annotating software for the multimodal analysis of digital genres”. During his talk, he ran a practical session on the multimodal analysis of audiovisual texts using the GRAPE-MARS software developed by his research group at UJI.

Thank you to all the researchers that participated in the seminar! Looking forward to the next one!
